Letter sent from the Secretary General of the NFSL to the French National Assembly

Excellencies the President and members of the National Assembly / Paris

We are writing to express our sincere disappointment that the National Assembly will receive Colonel Muammar Gaddafi. In doing so, you bestow a distinct privilege upon this man, who does not deserve such an honor to address the National Assembly members, representatives of all French people. Whereas your distinguished Assembly remains truly one of the Democratic strongholds in the world, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi is without doubt one of the main enemies of democracy. He has been convicted of crimes of international terrorism, engages in ongoing human rights crimes in Libya, and usurping power in Libya to this day.

Gaddafi’s anomalous positions regarding democratic and parliamentary representation is well-known, through his famous saying: "The parliamentary representation of the people is hypocrisy". How now is he given the right and allowed to address the representatives of the French people and their deputies when he has no respect for parliamentary representation or the rights of your people to elect their representatives.

We believe it is our duty to remind you and the world that Colonel Muammar Gaddafi’s legitimacy did not come through constitutional mandate or empowerment by the people through the ballot box; rather, he took power by military coup. Libyan people suffer from thirty-eight years under the rule of totalitarian dictatorship led by Colonel Muammar Gaddafi. Therefore Muammar Gaddafi has no legitimacy to address you on behalf of the Libyan people.

The Libyan people faced with the dictatorial rule of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi’s tyrant regime, looks forward to the support of free democratic nations that loves peace, and justice, Such as France, in order to achieve the aspirations of change, freedom, justice and democracy by establishing a democratic government based on the Constitution that guarantees fundamental rights and establishes justice and equality. It is necessary to achieve participation of the people through their elected representatives, institutions in the governance of the country, and in the direction towards potential development and progress and in restoring Libya’s ability to contribute positively to regional and international cooperation and to promote global peace and security. All this cannot be achieved with a regime of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi and the threat of dictatorship. Libya will not advance unless it is liberated from the chains of this regime.
Excellencies:
We call upon you not to allow Libyan/French partnership to be exploited the in a way that strengthens Gaddafi’s rule at the expense of the Libyan people's aspirations for change and freedom, justice and democracy. The Libyan people respectfully request from you your support for their just and legitimate struggle against the brutal dictatorship of Gaddafi, and support its aspirations for change and freedom, justice and democracy.
